7 School Lunchbox Ideas for Kids

Preparing meals for school in the morning can be quite a challenge, especially when an untouched packed lunch keeps coming back home in the backpack. Luckily, a boring cheese sandwich isn't the only option – school food can be colourful, delicious and surprisingly quick to prepare. Discover 7 tried-and-tested, simple lunchbox ideas that will delight your child.

What should a child's lunchbox contain?

A balanced lunchbox is more than just a quick filler – it's fuel for learning and playing all day long. The perfect packed lunch should include complex carbohydrates (for long-lasting energy), high-quality protein, healthy fats and a portion of fresh vegetables and fruit.

Avoid ready-made, processed snacks full of sugar and instead go for variety and colour, which naturally encourage children to eat. Don't forget about hydration either – be sure to include a water bottle with water or a homemade infusion.

School lunchbox ideas

Preparing a wholesome meal doesn't have to take up half your morning. Here are 7 simple, tasty and varied ideas that will delight your child and give them energy for hours.

1. Colourful sandwiches

An ordinary cheese sandwich can be dull, but in a "mini" version with a variety of toppings it will vanish from the container in no time. Choose wholegrain bread, spread it with mild cream cheese, and fill it with turkey, a leaf of crunchy lettuce, and slices of cucumber and pepper. To make it even more fun, use cookie cutters to cut the sandwiches into playful shapes, such as stars or hearts. They look great, and your child will be far more eager to reach for them at break time.

2. Porridge with toppings

Porridge works wonderfully not only warm at the table, but also as a cold meal in an airtight container. Cook the oats in milk or a plant-based drink, and once cooled, mix them with natural yoghurt and a little honey. Sprinkle your child's favourite fruit on top (such as blueberries, raspberries or banana) along with a handful of crunchy nuts. It's a nourishing meal that powers the brain for intensive work throughout the rest of the day.

3. Cream cheese and salmon wraps

A tortilla is a brilliant alternative to traditional bread, holding its freshness and shape well in a lunchbox. Spread a tortilla wrap with fluffy cream cheese, then layer on slices of smoked salmon, fresh cucumber and spinach. Roll it up tightly and slice into small rounds a few centimetres wide, resembling little rolls. This format is incredibly handy, easy to eat without messy hands, and simply delicious.

4. Courgette fritters

Courgette fritters are a clever way to sneak vegetables into the diet of even the most stubborn fussy eater. Grate the courgette, squeeze out the water, then combine it with an egg, a little flour and your favourite herbs, and fry until golden. The fritters taste great cold too and are perfect for little hands to grab. You can add a small container of herby yoghurt dip to the lunchbox for dunking.

5. Tabbouleh

If you're looking for a light and refreshing salad, Middle Eastern tabbouleh is a real winner. You can prepare it using cooked bulgur wheat or couscous, adding plenty of finely chopped parsley, ripe tomatoes, cucumber, and a little olive oil and lemon juice. This dish is packed with vitamin C and iron, doesn't go soggy in the container, and keeps its wonderful flavour all day. It's simple, nourishing, and brings an interesting change to the school diet.

6. A variety of things to simply munch on

Children love so-called finger food – snacks that are easy to grab and eat in a few seconds. Put together this part of the lunchbox with carrot and cucumber sticks, small cherry tomatoes, and a handful of favourite nuts or pumpkin seeds. You could also add a few homemade yeast breadsticks, corn puffs or dried fruit with no added sugar. Such a selection is a great change from traditional dishes and lets your child munch healthily during a short break.

7. Apple pancakes

Fluffy little pancakes with pieces of sweet apple are a classic that will bring a smile to any pupil's face. Fry them in a pan until golden, remembering to use wholegrain flour and as little added sugar as possible – the natural sweetness of the fruit will do the trick. Once cooled, pack a few into the lunchbox, seasoning them with a pinch of cinnamon for a lovely aroma. It's a great idea for a sweet, yet fully wholesome and filling packed lunch.

How to encourage your child to eat their lunchbox? – Extra tips

Even the tastiest and most wholesome food won't serve its purpose if it comes home untouched in the container. Here are a few practical tricks that will make your child eager to reach for the meals you've prepared:

  • A lunchbox chosen with the heart – go for a lunchbox that your child likes. Let them pick a model in their favourite colour, featuring a cartoon character, or decorate a plain container together with colourful, waterproof stickers. A pretty box makes the meal more appealing, and your little one will proudly pull it out of their backpack at break time.

  • Get them involved in the preparation – children are much more willing to eat what they helped create. Let your little one cut soft fruit (for example, with a plastic knife), stir the ingredients for the porridge, or put together their own sandwich.

  • Go for compartments and small portions – instead of one large dish, choose a lunchbox with dividers and pack smaller amounts of different foods. This way the meal doesn't look overwhelming, and your child has fun discovering each compartment.

  • Leave a nice surprise – a little note wishing them a good day, a simple drawing, a joke on a card, or a piece of fruit cut into a heart shape can bring a smile to their face and effectively encourage them to eat the rest of the contents.
