Why You Should Encourage Your Child to Draw

Do you ever wonder why your little one reaches for the crayons with such enthusiasm, and sometimes… for a pen and the living room wall? For a child, drawing is so much more than just a way to pass the time – it's their first language, a tool for exploring the world, and a stepping stone to further education. Discover why it's worth supporting this passion at every stage of your child's development.

What does drawing give a child?

Drawing may seem unremarkable, but it's actually a powerful workout for a child's developing brain and body. There are countless benefits to creating these little works of art, and the most important include:

  • Developing fine motor skills Handling a crayon teaches your little one the correct grip, precise movements, and the right amount of pressure. It's the most natural and effective way to prepare the hand for learning to write later on.

  • Training imagination and planning Before a castle, a dog, or an abstract shape appears on paper, the child has to imagine it first and then plan out how to arrange it within the space of the page.

  • Learning patience and concentration Putting their visions on paper requires sustained attention. Along the way, the little one learns that reaching a goal takes effort, and that mistakes are a natural part of creating.

  • A way to calm down and process emotionsArt activities are excellent for reducing stress and help soothe an overstimulated nervous system. For younger children, they're also a safe outlet for expressing emotions they can't yet put into words.

  • A worthwhile alternative to screens Drawing is the perfect cure for boredom. Unlike the passive consumption of content on tablets or smartphones, it requires the child to be creatively active.

How to encourage your child to draw

The most important thing is to give your child easy access to materials – make sure paper and crayons are always within sight and reach. It's also worth setting a good example by joining in the fun, because creating together without judgment or pressure builds a wonderful bond. Remember, too, that the right, visually appealing art supplies and high-quality accessories will definitely make your little one sit down to their next artistic challenge with far more enthusiasm and eagerness.

Drawing isn't the only worthwhile form of entertainment

A plain sheet of paper is an absolute classic, but let's remember that children's creativity doesn't have to – and in fact shouldn't – be limited to drawing alone. It's worth introducing them to other, equally enriching art activities:

  • Colouring Teaches precision, a sense of aesthetics, and staying within set boundaries, which many children find very relaxing.

  • Painting Allows for freer expression, teaches the principles of mixing colours, and provides wonderful sensory stimulation (especially when you use finger paints!).

  • Decorating everyday objects Painting your own designs on ceramic mugs or linen bags is a fascinating activity that gives children enormous satisfaction from owning a unique, handmade item. All you need are acrylic markers!

Is drawing an activity for every child?

Sometimes you'll come across the stereotypical belief that sitting quietly at a desk drawing patterns is mainly an activity for girls. Nothing could be further from the truth, because boys need to practise their hand dexterity, learn to concentrate, and express their emotions through art just as much! Regardless of gender or temperament, every child gains enormous benefits from art activities, which is why it's worth encouraging every little one to take part wisely and regularly.
