How to Ease School Anxiety?

Morning stomachaches, tears at the front door, and a firm "I'm not going" – for many parents this is a daily scenario that hides something deeper than a simple reluctance to get out of bed. School anxiety is a genuine emotional disorder that can rob a child of the joy of childhood and disturb the peace of the entire family.

How can you tell school phobia apart from momentary stress, and what lies beneath the surface symptoms of unease?

What is school anxiety (school phobia)?

School phobia is a serious anxiety disorder that manifests as paralysing fear and enormous stress at the very thought of going to an educational institution. This is not ordinary, momentary nervousness about a new situation or youthful laziness, but a strong emotional state that is difficult to control. Persistent, long-lasting tension prevents the child from functioning normally and drives them to avoid their everyday responsibilities at all costs.

How does school anxiety show itself?

Recognising school phobia requires careful observation, because anxiety makes itself known both psychologically and physically. The most common signals that should put every parent on alert are:

  • complaints of regular stomachaches, headaches and morning nausea, which often disappear once the decision to stay home has been made,

  • panic attacks, uncontrollable crying and intense anger appearing just before leaving for lessons,

  • sleep problems, including insomnia or recurring nightmares with school-related themes,

  • apathy, irritability, low mood and clear withdrawal from social life,

  • deliberately avoiding conversations about education and faking illness to skip classes.

Where does school phobia come from?

The causes of school anxiety can be highly complex, and the problem is most often the result of several overlapping factors. The table below presents the main underlying causes of school phobia that are worth examining first:

Problem category

Examples of causes of school anxiety

Social and relational difficulties

Rejection by the group, lack of friends, and bullying by other students.

Educational and school-related issues

Excessively high demands, pressure to get good grades, teacher criticism, and fear of failure.

Changes in the environment and family

Changing schools, parents' divorce, a tense atmosphere at home, or the arrival of a new sibling.

Emotional factors and the child's traits

Low self-esteem, a highly sensitive nervous system, separation anxiety, or natural difficulties adapting.

How to talk to your child about school phobia?

Open, empathetic communication is the absolute foundation of the process of easing childhood anxieties. For the conversation to bring the desired results and give your little one a real sense of security, it is worth sticking to a few key principles:

  • Listen without judging – Don't downplay the problem; instead give your child a safe space to freely express difficult feelings, without fear of criticism.

  • Help name the emotions – Make it easier for your child to identify exactly what they are feeling by asking directly about worries, sadness or unease.

  • Look for solutions together – Instead of imposing ready-made scenarios from above, encourage your child to think together about what would make returning to routine easier.

  • Stay completely calm – Remember that your composure passes on to your child, giving them the support they need and showing them that their problem is not something impossible to overcome.

How to help a child with school anxiety?

Overcoming school anxiety requires patience and the active involvement of adults in creating a suitable, understanding environment. Here are the most effective strategies and techniques you can implement to help your child regain their emotional balance:

  • Introduce a predictable routine. Building a calm morning schedule gives your child a sense of stability and noticeably reduces stress before leaving the house.

  • Use play and story therapy. Acting out school scenarios and reading themed books help younger children come to terms with difficult situations in a safe, accessible way.

  • Teach relaxation techniques. Doing breathing exercises together, simple meditations or elements of yoga effectively lower tension levels and help calm an overstimulated mind.

  • Ensure rest and recovery. Give your child enough free time without the pressure of duties so they can reset after a tough day.

  • Build emotional resilience. Praise your child for the smallest successes and show them that any setbacks are simply a natural and extremely important part of the learning process.

  • Cooperate with the school. Get in touch with the class teacher or school counsellor so you can monitor the situation together, protect the student from stressors, and make it easier for them to build positive relationships with their peers.

When should you see a specialist about school anxiety?

If the support of parents and school at home brings no clear improvement, and strong anxiety symptoms persist for a long time, you should seek professional help without delay. In such a situation, it is best to turn to an experienced child psychologist or begin cognitive behavioural therapy with your child, which will help them work through the mounting emotions in safe conditions. Thanks to such targeted efforts and close cooperation among all the adults in the child's environment, the child gains a real chance to fully overcome their anxiety and regain their former self-confidence.
